No. United’s sports-equipment page, checked 25 September 2026, says it doesn’t charge oversize bag fees for ski and snowboard equipment. The set, which can hold up to two snowboards and one boot bag, counts as a checked bag, and overweight fees apply above 50 pounds.

Can I take an avalanche airbag backpack on a plane?

Can I fly with a snowboard without a bag?

It isn’t a good idea. Delta says sports equipment must be packed in a durable protective container designed for it, and Southwest accepts snow equipment in a plastic bag only with a limited release of liability. Use a padded board bag.

Should I take my bindings off to fly?

You don’t have to, but bindings create pressure points. Many riders fold the highbacks down and pad around them, or remove them and pack the hardware in a sealed bag.

Can I pack my boots and clothes in my snowboard bag?

Often yes, but it adds weight. Southwest counts a board and a pair of boots as one item even in two bags; Delta accepts a boot bag but counts its weight with the board bag. Weigh everything before you go.

How to fly and travel with a snowboard

To fly with a snowboard, you check it as baggage in a padded board bag, and airlines such as Southwest and Delta charge their standard checked bag fee for it rather than a special sports fee. Check your airline’s own rules first, then pack, weigh and label the bag before you leave home.
